You absolutely can. Currently running mine off of my desktop, but it’s overkill and have a few coworkers that used nucs/cheap mini PCs to setup jellyfin. Biggest thing is to make sure you have enough storage to hold all of your media, then you’re fine.

My father got and installed two of the newer nest thermostats, and they are bar none two of the most annoying tech devices I’ve ever had the misfortune of having to fix. Have literally spent hours debugging them when changing the wifi password, they don’t support wpa3, and the setup app feels like a half assed student project. I know this audience probably isn’t interested in getting one, but if one of your family members gets some for free, do NOT let them install them.
Assuming it’s free and you weren’t planning to update to the newest stuff, yeah it’s a nice upgrade. Next up is a gpu upgrade…

They’re not really that great compared to AMD for the most part. Plus rumor is that AMDs next gen is a lot further ahead of Intel. Then again, it depends on how good of a deal you get on them and if power efficiency is a priority (I’ve heard that Intel still is pretty decent in that regard). That being said don’t get any of their 13th or 14th gen CPUs, that’s part of what has led to their current state of affairs.
Same, though I’m usually on the impossible ones, get the same kinda texture but probably taste a bit better. Still haven’t found a true hot dog substitute, kinda hard to fake that unique taste. On the other hand bacon and hamburger substitutes are almost the same as the real thing.

Pretty much. I have to use windows 11 for work, so I get the sluggish feeling. My 8th gen Intel laptop is much faster, despite being considerably older than my work laptop.

Yep. If I didn’t think it was stupider, I would almost think it was a plan to increase consumption of bs computer upgrades given how they’ve basically gotten to the point that people don’t really need to upgrade for the most part, outside of operating system changes.

Seems like an increase a bit in preparation. Who knows what they’ll be/what shortages will occur over the next couple of years. After all, the current bluff is a 100% tariff on chips. Which is why if you’re planning to upgrade in the next year or two and have the money, it might be a decent idea to pre-emptively update your parts before they jack up further.

Honestly, I kinda suspect the tariffs are speeding this up. I recently upgraded my desktop due to the suspicion that prices are gonna go bonkers shortly and since I was basically rebuilding it anyway, I went ahead and switched my last windows PC to Linux. Been a lot smoother than I had suspected, highly recommended.
Don’t forget, most computers are faster on Linux than on the newest windows version, so you can hold off on upgrades for longer if the hardware is physically fine, which just further decreases costs.
If you absolutely need it, then get it used or other method to where the original manufacturer who paid for the ad doesn’t profit, duh.
Yep. Most of the time someone has marked it somehow because it’s immensely annoying. That being said, there are a few stations that aren’t able to be muted, so I intentionally make a point to note whatever is being advertised and never buy it.
I mean, wasn’t it mostly spam anyway?
Excellent read, this isn’t a post you should just up vote blindly, read it first.

It’s how they getcha! That dang “Thinking for themselves!”

Well that’s lower than I expected.

Yeah. It largely reminds me of what reddit used to be a long time ago, a place for interesting stuff and to have a pleasant conversation.

Pretty much. I still occasionally have to go to reddit for some random questions, and the difference in tone is often rather jarring.
Thank you! The notification about subscribing was glitching out for me.
