Sites at that scale that cannot afford errors, downtime, or system breaches operate massive IT teams just to keep the systems running. That’s before even touching Logistics,Advertising, customer service, seller outreach, brand management, human resources, etc, etc. Ebay in 2023 had 132 Million customers. That’s 12,000 customers per employee per year, or 32 customers per employee per day assuming they worked the full 365 solid. A rather lean storefront actually, probably propped up significantly by the labor of their third-party sellers.

Unfortunately this particular clause has been tested pretty throughly in court and current courts (*in the United States of America) have decided that your average Joe has alternative options and can/has consented to the licensing clause of the Eula. The only thing that might change (and should change by the way) is Sony/others being able to use the term “purchase/buy” without specifying in clear detail that you’re purchasing a temporary license to the product and not a copy of the product. They’ve implemented a prototype, but it hasn’t been brought to market yet, so we’re probably not talking about the same thing if I had to guess. I’d recommend looking into the cybertruck implementation of it if you’re curious, I do think it’s ahead of its time and will remain novel for a while. Also engineering explained did video on the Lexus prototype. It suffered some pretty severe input delay, I have my curiosity if the Cybertruck implementation has the same issues but I’ve not seen anyone mention them yet.

I don’t think the novelty of steer by wire will wear off until there’s alternatives on the market. It’s at least got that going for it if nothing else imo.
