No, though parts of systemd have a scope creep issue, that’s not what I’m describing. I’m talking about Poettering deciding to create a service layer for Linux after stealing some ideas from MacOS. Reducing that to “scope creep” is misleading at best and feeds into the “systemd is a monolithic application” concern trolling at worst.
Don’t like systemd-resolve? Fine. I get that plenty of implementation details are incomplete, suck or have caused friction with other software. On the other hand it’s a really useful tool for dynamic split dns handling, which is why I like using it. You can disable it, I’ve done so on some workstations and servers, because of poor choices in internal domain names leading to mDNS issues, knock yourself out.
Don’t think it should be part of an init system? It really isn’t. I wouldn’t call systemd just an init system to begin with, though that was the initial project goal. Most of its parts are reasonably well separated or at least highly configurable for a service layer. I genuinely think it’s completely insane to have DNS resolution in libc, but people have gotten used to that. Systemd-resolved is completely inoffensive in comparison imho.
Don’t like systemd as a whole? Use a distro without it. It really is that simple. Everything has been discussed - at length. Wars have been fought. At this point, change will only come if the complainers actually sit down, shut up and do some work towards their goals.
Sorry this turned into such a rant, most of this isn’t even directed at you, this situation just annoys me. Especially this poor guy getting death threats on GitHub because someone riled up all the asshats in the community who have no idea how any of this works. You don’t really need to care about that from a consumer perspective. Unfortunately however, this is a common weakness of FOSS projects. If the maintainer is an asshole, the project suffers and eventually dies most of the time. Being an asshole is not conducive towards attracting contributors. Who knew?

The choice of programming language for new projects almost always comes down to the existing ecosystem and its popularity in the space you’re working in. Some of the most popular languages also have the advantage of being deeply embedded in the academic pipelines educating newcomers to the field, which obviously includes C++. Being one of the worst choices for a first programming language to learn hasn’t stopped C++ yet and likely won’t for a long time to come.

Depends heavily on what place you ask for help in. There are plenty of spaces explicitly meant for community tech support. In OPs case, I’ll say the title doesn’t help and asking an LLM for advice on a topic you’re unfamiliar with (and not second-guessing the commands you paste into the terminal) is such a bad idea that it really can’t be understated. I regularly catch some of my colleagues making AI-assisted mistakes and they’re professionals who genuinely know better. This shit shouldn’t ever be recommended as a learning tool for beginners without some kind of supervision or guard rails to ensure you’re not being gaslit.

Putting aside the ideological discussion about software licenses, saying that “they” are forcing Rust into the Linux kernel is a bold claim when Linus Torvalds clearly doesn’t mind the inclusion and even encourages it for example in driver code, at least as an experiment.
The internet would be a much quieter place if people were forced to have a minimal amount of insight into the topic they’re posting about. I guess what really annoys me is when popular blogs like this one deliberately frame something they don’t like in a way that makes it look worse to people who don’t know any better. There are very few people calling this shit out, be it on lemmy or the comments of the article itself. They even lied about FL1 being “bullet-proof” and “unaffected” by this bug, when it clearly wasn’t, according to Cloudflare - the primary source of this shitstain of an article.
I swear some of these commenters will jerk each other off about how “Rust is bad, actually” even if the root cause of an issue was someone intentionally crashing their app. Where do you even get this kind of attitude from? I’ve been around when Rust was the popular topic in any programming-related discussions and while there was plenty of evangelism and CS-101 experts making wild claims, nothing warrants this kind of irrational hatred. I thought you need to go to the phoronix forums to find people who have such loud opinions with very little actual programming experience, but apparently I was wrong.
There are good reasons to have unwrap or at least expect. There is no reason to use it in the case that Cloudflare used it in.

I don’t blame people for thinking that something is off after reading the linked blog post. This wouldn’t be the first time Google does something like this to OSS that poses some kind of potential threat to their business model (this is also mentioned in the post).
To be fair to HL2: just like the first game, it was very technologically advanced for the time and the focus was clearly on making something novel and groundbreaking. Poor performance on release is still a legitimate criticism, but there are far worse offenders out there that don’t have the excuse of pushing the technical boundaries of a medium.
You’re already doing great if you just don’t disable IPv6. Bonus points if your ISP and your router supports proper dual stack IPv4 + v6, then you can actually connect to the internet using v6! Also, fun fact: the original Nintendo Switch does not support IPv6 at all. Pretty much all other non-ancient consumer stuff should be fine. Check your clients IP address assignments, maybe you’re already using IPv6.
