That’s a valid concern, and it seems much of the function of the fediverse only exists because it’s not worth treating it too maliciously. I guess the question how could one combat that?

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Mozilla Say Google Search Deal Vital to Firefox's SurvivalEnglish
182·10 months agoHow much active development does a browser engine need? If Mozilla died would I quickly be finding a larger chunk of websites that aren’t supported? Because as it sits, Firefox feels like one of the most corporate pieces of open source software I use daily, and I need to know just how tragic it would be if Mozilla died.

2·10 months agoFair enough, yeah I might still dabble in trying it out if I find the time. I just hate adds and apps to a pathological degree, so if discord gets too gross I wanna know how hard it would be to jump ship lol. Thanks for the insights!

3·10 months agoMy main experience with it was setting up a little space on the matrix.org server. We could in theory venture out into the broader server, but never really bothered. So it definitely wasn’t exactly discord, but worked well for our needs of having a couple rooms and the option to hop into a persistent video/voice room with jitsi.
I’ve never touched the server side, but I am a little curious, especially with the QR account creation someone else mentioned. Not needing to walk folks through logging into another service, and instead just having it be a webpage they visit that stays working would be rad. How did you find running the server?

2·10 months agoYeah I can see what you mean. Even if it is just a sectioned off bit of the glob of discord servers, a discord instance does feel like an island in a way that a matrix space does not. Last I remember using them it was still a little messy in ways that felt strange too. The real struggle is having folks to check them out with considering many of my friend group already had to be talked into trying discord lol.

2·10 months agoIsn’t replicating this the goal of spaces? How are those doing on matrix?
That’s fair, I know there is like communities or something, but they seem a bit janky. It’s definitely not “there”, but it’s better than some of it’s reputation suggests.
I remember setting up persistent rooms with jitsi that function like discord rooms, I guess not native, but it was from a plugin that was near native. There was also a feature I remember them mentioning for drop in video calls, but I haven’t tried those.
I won’t argue it’s a full replacement, I think you still can’t do push to talk or toggle mute, which is pretty disqualifying for me. But it’s definitely closer than Telegram or Lemmy.
Element does have voice/video channels.

11·11 months agoOption 1: Remote playback with a Plex Pass
Upgrading to any Plex Pass subscription is a great option for server owners, as it ensures all users accessing the Plex Media Server can stream remotely, without an additional charge. Even if you don’t run your own Plex Media Server, a Plex Pass subscription will not only allow you to stream remotely from any server to which you have access, but also lets you make use of other Plex Pass functionality like Skip Intro and Skip Credits.

Hey that’s not fair, they recently added tabs to their file explore. I mean sure it has a shared history, so if you open a new tab and navigate, then return to the previous tab back takes to you their useless ‘home screen’, but still, there are tabs kinda!
