Paid illegal services are often HUGE bang for buck value (no enshitification, no limits, no nonsense and often better customer service)
These apps are so bad they have recorded people “hard braking” when they are home watching TV (just check the Play store for any of them and read the reviews)… there is no way this isn’t ripe for abuse

The Raspbian OS was fine, the Emby client would not start (segmentation fault) and the performance on the web client was not great.
Now on Android, Emby client runs pretty well (better than on the FireTV sticks I am trying to replace) but I could not get Google Play working (yet) which left me without F1TV (the only “other” vid app I care about for now to run on the TV)

In America, the government intervention is whatever corporations pay politicians to say and do… it’s actually worse than pure Capitalism and they managed, through regulatory capture, to turn the government against the people or competition for their paymasters
Got my last Pi (RBP5) to try to set up a simple TV player under linux… unfortunately the performance was shit… had to go with Android and it’s barely OK (bang for buck)
With the IPO I expect RBP are going to become more expensive and significantly enshitified… so that’s that
Ok, my only goal in replying to you was to point out that, your surprise is based on some fake, very easily manipulable information… They do this manipulation in part to portrait themselves as something they are not, which is part of the PR strategy whether it works on you or not… that is all

I am not defending AI at all… in fact, from your comment it seems we both hate it equally.
All I was saying is that they have already “shown” this magical scanning of fridge as a function already available… it turned out to be complete garbage and fake (as most of the AI over hype they have pumped) but they did. Please note I actually posted as “in what turned out to be one of the many AI scams”

Going back to the original thread, my intention was to say that AI was promised as a way for anyone to be a programmer now. That is not me saying it, that is literally what was pumped out. To an extend, a very short extend, this is true. You can get a little script going or maybe even some heavy Excel spreadsheet manipulation with AI tools and not knowing any code. But that is the end of it.
What I have been able to confirm AI doing is about 30% of what is being promised out there… literally the “pro” vs “nailed it” discrepancy. I also agree with you in that this bit of AI that does work is not worth the harm we are doing to jobs, the environment, etc
Agreed on the useless… the system I was referring to was the Rabbit R1 which proved to be a complete scam… but one of their demo/commercials shows a guy saying “hmm that was delicious, check the fridge and make sure to order all missing ingredients to prepare this dinner again tomorrow”
In practice, some youtuber demoed it and after long ackward pause, the device says “sorry, the uber eats API is not working” or something hilariously related but wrong

Well that depends… if I have only $300 at the end of the month but I have already paid every bill and allocated $1,000,000 for entertainment, another $1,000,000 for personal expenses, another $1,000,000 for pet services, etc etc etc… the $300 left mean nothing… why do I need “wiggle room” when I can not just wiggle but literally run in every direction until I get tired and still not hit any limits?
The relatively small profit margin is a PR strategy… one that is working well on you giving you the false impression the company is “tight” when in reality, they are milking every bit of it before you get to that figure.
So AI can magically see everything in your refrigerator, pantry, etc, right?

For me personally, it was all about balance.
15 years ago, Gmail/Inbox was a great email client, the domain was great and popular (so no need to spell it out for people) and I would “pay” by getting ads based on my emails read by a bot.
Now Gmail is a terrible email client, the best updates are ridiculous things like moving buttons around and it takes Google years to roll out. The thing loses emails, mislabels and misclassifies stuff and the rules work for a week then blow up. On top of that, google is now basically a proctologist considering how far up my ass they want to go
The balance is broken… Google now officially sucks (IMO)
