Mesh networks have been made using ham radios! It’s not ready for the general public since you need a ham operators lisence & their range is limited by line of sight. But if you own a large property, you can network your own space using the tech. It’s also a good back up in the case of a large scale infrastructure disruption.

Chiming in to say that on my asus laptop, the start up button is f12! Press as soon as the first logo appears on the screen. It might take a few times to get the timing right, if you miss it just restart the computer.

It should take you to a menu that looks like a classic hacker screen (blue screen with pixilated text, no clickable UI). Then go to the boot options and select the USB.

The potential for self hosted AI is there! I’ve seen a few projects in the works, and if youre tech saavy you can spin up your own. It is pretty resource intensive, but could be run on a home server.

I’m pretty excited to have my own personal AI, vut i want one that is trained on data I select and who only phones home to my server lol.

Super interesting to read your more technical perspective. I also think facial recognition (and honestly most AI use cases) are best when used to supplement an existing system. Such as flagging a potential shoplifter to human security.

Sadly most people don’t really understand the tech they use for work. If the computer tells them something they just kind of blindly believe it. Especially in a work environment where they have been trained to do what the machine says.

My guess is that the people were trained on how to use the system at a very basic level. Troubleshooting and understanding the potential for error typically isn’t covered in 30min corporate instructional meetings. They just get a little notice saying a shoplifter is in the store and act on that without thinking.

It was during a class discussion, definetly thoughtless on my part. She didnt shame me, just explained how she felt about it. It was an english course so exploring the connotations of language was pretty typical.

I think of it as a moment that really thought me about the complexities of every day language & the impact of cultural tropes (like the light good, dark bad concept).

I don’t mostly because I have a ‘replays in the middle of the night’ memory of using it in conversation with a black woman & she let me know exactly how it made her feel. Idk sometimes offense isn’t about history it’s just about how the random person next to you feels & the phrase isn’t so important to me that I can’t express the same thing in different words.

This term is trickier since it is entangled with Europe’s long standing use of blackness to denote wrongness. & that whole dichotomy of good=white bad=black is an often talked about source of controversy in literature.

As the wiki says “It means a situation in which somebody accuses someone else of a fault which the accuser shares”. In the case of the quote the fault is being black. Both pot and kettle are black.

Here is an article I found that did a good job delving into the topic. They end up agreeing the term is okay to use but also offer some alternative phrases that side step the potentially offensive phrasing. My fav was, “the wifi calling the narrator unreliable”.

That’s fair. It’s definetly one of those offensive terms people use without necessarily thinking about, like “getting gyped” or “pot calling the kettle black”.

I get that your anger probably comes from the frustration of a bad relationship. I also want to encourage you not to use bigoted terms. Just refering to them as your ex’s family, or ex’s fucked up family would have gotten a similar message across.

It really undermines your point, draws focus away from what youre trying communicate, & makes you look like a biased and unreliable narrator.

I also find it to be a derogatory, distasteful, and bigoted term. I definetly think less of people I hear who use it, & hope eventually it will be dropped from the cultural conciousness like other bigoted terms.

It’s a way to police what “whiteness” should be, and is a term I’ve only ever heard from well off and judgemental people.

Yeah! Thats definetly a step in the right direction. Programs like that will help ease the transition towards a new system as technology continues advancing.

I see where youre comming from & also think its important to support artists I like, and I do. I think both AI and artists can coexist & serve different purposes.

Something like this, using AI for a banner, is using a tool for people to create something they couldnt/wouldnt before. It doesnt mean I’m not going to buy a cool print or painting from an artist I like.

& I think its cool to have something that aggregates information and makes it accesible and easy to work with for the masses. Its messed up that it is currently controlled by corporate interests, but there are also people working on FOSS ai. Its this kind of snapshot of humanity in its current state, that I think goes beyond any particular artist/writer/person.

I get being worried about it taking jobs, but I think new ones will spring up to take their place.

(Or really optimistically maybe well see some sort of radical change that will make the concept of ‘earning a living’ obsolete, like UBI or something)

Edited to add: as a writer, people who buy my writing wouldnt just use ai to replace me. If anything it can supplement my work by making it easier for fans to make fanart & help build hype around the universe and characters that I created.

Yo db dont let these haters get you down. I think it looks like a really cool project and love the idea of a shifting banner than anyone can contribute prompts to. I also love the idea of backgroud details being influenced by various metrics of the community.

AI is a tool (just like photoshop, electric lawn mowers, and combustion engines). Anyone who thinks its replacing artists are really underestimating the editing needed to produce something good from AI generators. And this is comming from a writer who loves how much AI has helped with various parts of the process.

In addition to what others have said (neem oil, keep it quarentined) also make sure to clean and sanitize the surrounding area and any area its been in recently to avoid reinfection.

Also mites hate airflow. Keeping plants in spaces that arent too closed off can help discourage mites from setting up shop.
