  • So what do they actually offer, on top of the work of creative people making music? Not much.

OK, so I left Spotify for Navidrome a while back BUT. What Spotify sells isn’t music. Spotify sells curation and recommendations. Most people aren’t music lovers that want to hunt for cool new music. They just want a pre-generated list of songs that they’ll more or less like. That’s actually kinda huge.

A recommendation engine is something I wish fediverse or open source would tackle. I’m on Navidrome now, but I’m definitely listening to way less music now—access isn’t an issue—I just haven’t had time to hunt around for new music. Investigating new bands takes time. On Spotify, you do it without even really thinking about it.

  • Wow! It’s so nice that the company got back to him! /s

But, seriously, I’m not doing take home projects anymore. I recently interviewed at a company that rhymes with Lagi. They asked me to build an app for them for 2 weeks. I did. I sent them the project and then they just fucking ghosted me. I sent them 3 follow up emails and nothing. Not even a rejection.

  • get closed as a duplicate of the similar post

I’ve definitely had this happen to be before. It’s annoying.

What I do in that case is proactively say:

I’m facing problem X. I’ve tried searching for solutions. I found post X2 and X3 that are similar, but my problem is actually different because of Y.

    Sometimes it helps.

Also, if you see people being assholes you can report them. There’s a flag for “unfriendly or unkind”. I’ve definitely used that before.

  • Even without LLMs, it’s possible StackOverflow would have eventually faded into irrelevance

Yeah, exactly. A lot of groups have a Discord :( or other forums where people ask questions. I know I’ve had to ask questions on Svelte’s Discord :( for example. And I think even once on some YouTube influencer’s Slack…

Sucks cuz both of those places are silos and my questions and answers are forever lost.

  • YES! Nextcloud is actually kinda good. I was skeptical for a long time, but I’ve changed my mind recently.

If you don’t want to self-host (I’m not there yet, it seemed like a pain at first glance), then there are 2 online hosting providers that I’ve used recently.

    • nubo.coop fully manages Nextcloud for you, you just use it as a normal SaaS
    • northmail.ca also Nextcloud as a service, same as Nubo

Nubo is in Europe, while Northmail is in Canada.

They both offer email, notes, calendars, contacts, cloud file storage. Nubo also offers a tasks app, while Northmail doesn’t yet.

I’m in the US, so Nubo was a little slow for me. I’ve been using Northmail for about 1 week now. Northmail’s Nextcloud instance is faster for me. Northmail also uses a way more recent version of Nextcloud. Nubo’s Nextcloud is pretty old. Northmail is also offering 100GB for $0.99 CAD per month, which is way more than Nubo.

I had to move off Nubo because my bank doesn’t do international wires.

If Northmail adds Nextcloud Tasks, then I will have everything I want from Northmail!

  • 😆😂🤣 Uuuuhh… Aaaah… I normally generate a random password and use it as my username for most services. Like even my bank.

This is because I’ve realized the username is mostly useless and is just a handle for my account. It doesn’t matter to me if my username is jsmith, meow123, or kekxbek. In fact, it’s easier if I don’t have to come up with something novel or cool. Either way it goes in my password manager, so it’s not like I have to even remember it.

I’m a real boy. I promise. Not a malicious bot.

    Although… If I were a malicious bot, that’s exactly what I would say! 😲
