  • When that major drama unfolded with him getting booted then re-hired. It was super fucking obvious that it was all about the money, the data, and the salesmanship He is nothing but a fucking tech-bro. Part Theranos, part Musk, part SBF, part (whatever that pharma asshat was), and all fucking douchebag.

AI is fucking snake oil and an excuse to scrape every bit of data like it’s collecting every skin cell dropping off of you.

  • I would be willing to pay an initial setup fee followed by some maintenance fee. I would expect the initial fee to be significant due to a custom setup/requirements. (I am talking just setup, not cost of hardware/ physical installation).

Unique home network with 2 managed switches.

Self hosted security DVR, automated computer backup, photo backup, network drive for document storage and then self hosting a Jellyfin server along with a torrent service.

(I am sweating just thinking about trying to set that up)

Storage will be a RAID setup where I can just upgrade by throwing a new drive into an open slot and replace (as necessary) existing drives by just swapping them out and server automatically handles the data management.

I have a VAGUE idea of what that takes

Maintenance would cover service calls to resolve problems due to security updates/patches, end of life upgrades, normal planned maintenance type of stuff.

User caused issues should be extra :) (i.e. I was just trying to install a Minecraft server)

Couple hundred bucks, at least, for setup. And that seems cheap.

I would pay $10-20 a month for a maintenance fee after an initial setup fee.

I would MUCH rather give my money to an individual sysadmin than a corporate megalith that will use my membership to force an arbitration clause to any future service of theirs I use. Fuck the mouse. Fuck em all. I tried to do it right and that still want enough for them.

  • I would be happy if I could pay you to just set up and periodically check my setup. I only say that because I would probably want to put together something that cost more than $150. But I am absolutely overwhelmed by what I don’t know. Every tutorial I read gives me more questions than answers.

I just want to self host, share it with a close circle of friends, and keep everyone else’s noses out of my business.

  • TLDR: The bogeyman is dumb people repeating dog whistle arguments like this, that help their side, instead of issues that hurt their side.

Wall of angry man text (only read of you are trapped in a hurricane like I am):

I really just figured you were the fucking idiot parroting their dumbass arguments.

If there is a possibility that you are not just another troll…

They ABSOLUTELY have teams of people who monitor social media interactions and they know exactly what people respond to.

They know how to frame an argument in a way that will make sense to someone that “Just kinda knows the issues, or at least think they do.”

With the objective to make the argument about something that, while usually meaningless, will get people speaking their talking points. It muddies the waters and gets people talking about issues they can control (or doesn’t hurt their candidate) instead of issues they can’t.

It is not rocket surgery. Half the work is automatic data harvesting. Facebook made it possible to target individuals for ad placement 15 years ago. They know exactly what dog whistle will make you bark, what will make you post online, what you will share with others, and they will manipulate the fuck out of it.

So for example, you are arguing that Biden is a shit choice for the Democratic candidate (he is, but arguing about that now only helps the right) instead of the BILLION other things wrong with Trump.

So whether you think you are or not, you are a fucking stooge for the right. Go bleep with the other sheep because your energy is only helping Trump.

My wife and I are registered Republicans. She worked in politics for over 15 years. We were young and naive while the Tea Party slowly took over because the people with the money started to realize just how big a base the fundy morons were, and just how easy it was to manipulate people.

They don’t need bogeymen. They just need a competent data harvesting algorithm (spoiler: they can afford to pay for the ones that already have everything), and a handful of people creating the types of arguments you are using. Then they let the morons like you do the work for them.

My wife got paid almost $15k a month to do 10-15 radio spots a month, around the country, (she just needed to call in) to talk about political issues. It was all bullshit. The interviews were setup and exchanges were practically scripted word for word, but designed to sound candid. The point was to push wedge issues, to get people talking about things they were passionate about but had little real bearing. But it would get people to vote, or it would get people arguing talking points that only hurt the other side. (Citizens United really fucking ruined this country’s political landscape, but JFC that PAC money was hard to walk away from.)

Now the effort to do it requires even less work. It’s 90% online and even more effective, because people think they are so smart that they’ll never fall for it.

It took me researching Benghazi, for a graduate project, to realize just how fucked up the misinformation machine is. I realized how easily I was misled and most importantly, how I could not trust news organizations to provide accurate information. (They are not necessarily trying to be subversive, they are just trying to be the first one with the story out and want to sell ad space, so the more sensationalized, the better).

I know this is a wall of text, I’ve got a hurricane on top of me and the power is out (yay ERCOT), so I’ve got too much time.

I’m just a faceless internet pundit ranting and name calling, so don’t give my argument any more worth than this:

Who does your argument really help and why is it more important to discuss than the 100+ other crisis level issues we have. For example, how can we restore legitimacy to a Supreme Court that has just normalized punditry from the bench? Or, how do we restore the idea that our leaders should be statesman that have a responsibility to be truthful and there be repercussions when they aren’t?
