Backups are the most overlooked part of getting into self hosting. You’re basically a sysadmin now, you have to act like one. Get remote storage (cloud, friend / family house, hdd in a safety deposit box, etc…) and get your 3-2-1 on

1·27 days agoEasy, reliable backups are key. I’ve used komodo with automatic updates for over a year and watchtower before that for a couple more. I’ve only had one issue when Nginx Proxy Manager had a release that deleted all of its own data. Didn’t take long to realize that the services were still up and what the problem was. Restored the missing data from Proxmox backups, pinned the Nginx version for a while, then turned auto update on again. I’ll stick to this until checking updates is less work than fixing the occasional problem
For the record, i literally said “if the math works out” 😁
I kinda compare it to semi truck weigh stations. I found out some time ago that if the math works out that a truck got from one weigh station to another too fast the driver can get a speeding ticket since its assumed they broke the law getting there. Apply that to money. If a person accumulates too much money, it should just be assumed that person broke laws getting it and they should be severly fined (like, most of it).

131·1 month agoI resent that the cost to the car company to install seat warmers is the actual installation of the seat warmers. Running them costs ME money in electricity generated by gasoline I bought. It costs them nothing to run them but i have to pay a subscription to use them on top of paying to power them?
The football grandstand continues to cost the owners in maintenance and space that they own. You pay for the privilege of using something that is not yours. I bought my car, I shouldn’t have to continue to pay for the privilege of using something I already own since the equipment is already there and doesn’t require any interaction with a remote service that would make sense to charge for (navigation, satellite radio, etc…)

I’m pretty convinced this is the play. Drive up DIY PC parts then promote thin cloud clients as a way to have a PC without paying the crazy prices that they set. It’s a lot easier to tell you “it’s safer for the children” and pillage every file, action, and keystroke for AI training and data brokerage. Your owned PC is a black box for them and it’s their wet dream to own it for you… As a subscription of course.
