I think the Democrats are too far right, but that’s not what lost them the election. What lost them the election is that voters think the President controls the price of groceries, and if cheaper groceries means killing a lot of brown people, that’s a small price to pay.

Someone who repackages/patches free software has different incentives than upstream. So generally speaking, derivative browsers are more privacy friendly, have better features, etc.
That’s not to say that upstream isn’t important. It absolutely is! It’s just that derivatives are generally better.
This was a reasonable thing to point out, but the title you used ends up blunting your point completely.
I think it’s good of them to do this, but yes, releasing a browser that isn’t open source in 2024 is pretty ancient thinking.
As far as what engine it’s based on, there are really 3. Blink, Webkit, and Gecko. I agree that if you’re worried about Google taking over, Blink is the worst one to choose, but it’s not like there are a lot of options.
Yeah I read a blog post about why it isn’t and the answer was pretty bog-standard answers for why anything is closed-source: “if we make these cool customizations open, then anyone could take it and make a competing product.”

There’s a guy who works as a product owner at my employer. He has a PharmD. He got fed up with the metrics for how many prescriptions he had to fill. Now he does software.
It’s crazy to think that someone has a terminal degree in a really technical field and he nope’d out because of how bad it got.
I’m an elder millennial and I’ve spent maybe 3 or 4 hours playing a game on the internet. I have played probably several days worth of games on an intranet with friends. I’m not interested in playing against people I don’t know.
I also have really old hardware so I haven’t played online with a friend in maybe 15 years. I’m too busy adulting and newer gear isn’t a priority.
Could be worse. He could live in a country which doesn’t have universal healthcare.
