17·3 months agouhm idk who’s not familiar with Thiel but the blueprint of his “utopia” - “The Sovereign Individual” was literally co-written by no other than William Rees-Mogg a conservative house of lords cross-bencher who’s also the father of two other conservative MPs that have served in the UK Parliament.
the 2014 reprint of the book has a foreword by Thiel, where he says that it’s “the most influential book he had read”
so as usual the theoretical frameworks have been drafted in the heart of empire and implemented in the “land of the free”

17·5 months agoThe amount of cope happening in that thread to convince themselves that cloud seeding caused the flood is off the charts…
@Grok could cloud seeding have caused the floods?
No, cloud seeding contributes 10-15% extra rain maximum
But @Grok couldn’t that have been enough to push it over the threshold
No, this was 40 inches of rain brought by a massive tropical storm
But @Grok if it didn’t do anything why did they stop cloud seeding before the storm if it doesn’t contribute significantly
(At this point Grok gives up and a human replies) You don’t need more water when you already have lots of water
Mfs will believe localised weather meddling can cause a flood but can’t believe trillions of tons of CO2 can exacerbate natural disasters…
I can’t believe that Grok is fighting the good fight in this case but by the looks of it they will only agree with it if it matches their existing belief system…

262·7 months agoI hadn’t noticed how pro-cop some feddit.org users are but a cursory glance at people taking police reporting at face value and then openly defending cops punching people in the face with “it’s out of context” reasoning is just surreal.
It reeks to me of living in a bubble your whole life and never having experienced police repression - so your only response is “it can’t be the police, they’ve never done anything against me, it must be the protestors that are wrong”
Usually I’m one that hates leftist infighting but defacto trying to suppress a genocide because the “law says so” is rather weak. Still I totally understand wanting to protect yourself from repression but surely if you cared about both justice and your well being you would just hand over the community to someone else? Unless of course you actually agree with the “law”…
idk i think our incentive should be to cure diseases with public funding and make people healthy instead of for profit but what do i know

United Kingdom@feddit.uk•UK: Rooftop solar could reduce energy bill for the country's poorest families by almost a quarter, study saysEnglish
61·10 months agoYou know what would reduce it by almost 50%? Not spending half your salary on rent…
Maybe then people could afford solar panels, insulation, heat pumps and general home improvements with their newly discovered 100% increase in spending

31·11 months agoSo your argument is “people will break the rules so we shouldn’t have any rules because it doesn’t matter”?
This is the classic nazi bar argument - which has been proven time and time again that “free speech absolutism” consistently leads to spaces becoming hostile to marginalized groups
I see you have your heart in the right place but by insisting on everyone having equal rights to say anything - you are inherently favoring the oppressor over the oppressed.
I don’t think we’ll come to an agreement so I’ll stop replying as this feels futile to argue over.
EDIT: Just FYI this is what you’re defending in this instance

41·11 months agoSo why leave this comment? You yourself identify the social impact of “assigning a label (i.e. how others react to it)” - so for what purpose are you arguing for what labels are to be assigned?
Can you not just accept that the people impacted by this label (and the scientific community) have recognized that this label is harmful to individuals and not feel the need to chime in?
Or do you feel your desire for pedantry is more important than the negative impact such a label can have on marginalized groups?
What’s gained by insisting on potentially harmful labels?
Even by your own admission, labels have social impact. So why are you choosing to argue for harmful ones?
EDIT: If you’re actually arguing for better acceptance of people with mental disorders - I would recommend volunteering at a mental health institution or defending people’s right to self-determination.

Technology@lemmy.world•Meta Now Lets Users Say Gay and Trans People Have 'Mental Illness'English
416·11 months agoActually that’s a common misconception - while gender dysphoria is listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) - it’s not actually a mental disorder (similar to how the DSM includes physiological and environmental issues like Insomnia or Social Exclusion) - main reason it’s there is for admin purposes and to facilitate treatment access.
However, a condition like body dysmorphia (think Anorexia Nervosa) is considered a mental disorder because the issue is the mind incorrectly perceiving the body - therefore it can be treated using psychotherapy which enables the mind to correctly perceive the body and prevent harm.
People who experience gender dysphoria on the other hand - actually correctly perceive their body (that’s where the distress comes from) so psychotherapy doesn’t work to alleviate this - as you can’t therapy away an accurate perception (think gay conversion therapy)
Which is why after many decades of research the only treatment that’s been found to work is aligning the body with the mind - as at that point the mind continues perceiving the body correctly but this time it’s congruent with it’s mental model which alleviates the distress.
Hope this helps :)
