Britain is full of people who don’t want to admit they’re Tories, Liz Truss told the launch rally of the new Popular Conservatism (PopCon) movement on Tuesday, 6 February. Speaking in central London, the short-lived former prime minister said: “Britain is full of secret Conservatives – people who agree with us but don’t want to admit it because they think it’s not acceptable in their place of work, it’s not acceptable at their school.” Ms Truss also hit out at Rishi Sunak’s government for failing to take on “left-wing extremists” she claimed had gained control of UK institutions.
People just call labour that because they want them to be a socialist party. I would like them to be as well because I think that’s the direction society needs to move in but unfortunately they are not socialist. Doesn’t mean however that they are like the conservatives. That are just left of center.
That’s still a massive improvement, if only because they are competent. We can look at societal change in the future, but right now I’ll settle for effective governance. It will be nice to go through a week without having to hear about 16 different scandals.
