Let's take social media away from billionaire capture.

With Zuckerberg going full Musk last week, we can no longer let billionaires control our digital public square.

I think this is a good thing. However, as John Gruber put it:

And with a team of “technical advisors and custodians” that includes both the executive director and the president of the Mozilla Foundation, I suspect this initiative might prove as successful as Firefox.

But still, I hope the recent moves by Muskrat and Fuckster push more people to open-web platforms and help the Fediverse grow. It’s time these shitbags lose some control over what people consume.

      Bluesky follows a model they’re more familiar and therefore more comfortable with, even if its the same model that got them where they are in the first place. Bluesky’s federation protocol doesnt matter so much as the fact that Bluesky is a singular silo that all Bluesky users can see all content and other users in does. Bluesky self-hosted sites will be a ‘nice addition’ that most users won’t have to care or think about.

      I love lemmy and fediverse stuff, but even I am stressed out at the idea of having to make sure I have some kind of replication across different instances, having to keep track of who federates (or doesn’t) with who, and always wondering if my home instance is “the right one.”

    I been on the Fediverse around 2-3 years(closer to 3)

    and, even still am trying out Fediverse platforms I hadn’t got into as much as others. Such as Pixelfed.
