It’s hardly even surprising now is it. It’s a similar story in the water system, there are 50+ year old pumps being continuously bodged back together when they should have been replaced decades ago.

But hey, we don’t need to worry about the petrol distribution network: We sold that off years ago, and I’m sure the private company owning it isn’t wringing every penny out while ignoring all maintenance.

But given the profit that’s been made from gas, how is there any excuse? What have they been doing for decades?

    Paywalled.

Edit: Refreshing seemed to make the paywall banner go away…

Edit2: Nevermind, paywall banner comes up several seconds after. Disabling javascript for the telegraph domain makes the entire article visible.

If you’re using Firefox and uBlock Origin, there’s a filter called Bypass Paywalls Clean filter worth installing.

Firefox has a reader view that seems to work. Look for the page icon to the right of the URL field. When clicked before the paywall message comes up the entire article was visible for me.

Well there’s a shock. 60 odd years and nobody thought they might need replacing in the future.

But it shows how good they were in the first place 😉

It’s hilarious because the British have been really good at a few things. Recently those were engines with Rolls Royce and processors with ARM and we sold both off cheaply

So are they driving the compressor stages with an external motor, or using jet exhaust to compress the gas in the network directly?
