In the context of British higher education:
A “first” (short for first-class honours) is the highest classification of an undergraduate degree, typically awarded to students with an overall grade of 70% or above.
A “2:1” (pronounced “two-one” and short for upper second-class honours) is the next highest classification, usually awarded for scores between 60% and 69%.
